BUILT CIRCA 1840 BY EDWARD BURHANS ("SQUIRE ED"), THE CORNER STORE, AS IT HAS BEEN KNOWN LOCALLY FOR NEARLY TWO CENTURIES, WAS THE FIRST AND MOST CONTINUOUS STORE IN ROXBURY, SELLING DRY GOODS AND GROCERIES. THE CORNER STORE HAD MANY DIFFERENT OWNERS, NOTABLY JOHN BURR GOULD, WHO TRADED THE FAMILY FARM FOR THE BUILDING WHEN HE REALIZED HIS SON JAY GOULD WASN'T LIKELY TO BECOME A FARMER. AFTER A BRIEF STINT BOOKKEEPING IN THE BUILDING, WHERE HE ALSO AUTHORED "HISTORY OF DELAWARE COUNTY" (1856), JAY WENT OFF TO NEW YORK CITY TO BECOME ONE OF THE GILDED AGE'S MOST NOTORIOUS ROBBER BARONS (THE PROTOTYPE FOR MR. RUSSELL ON THE POPULAR HBO SHOW). IN THE 1980S, THE CORNER STORE BECAME A BAR, A RESTAURANT, AND EVENTUALLY ORPHIC GALLERY. OPENED IN 2010 BY PHILLIP LENIHAN, A CLASSICS SCHOLAR, IMPRESARIO AND BON VIVANT, ORPHIC AND ITS OFFSHOOT, THE 8-TRACK MUSEUM, SPECIALIZED IN MUSIC-RELATED ART AND MUSIC HISTORY. AFTER PHIL'S UNTIMELY DEATH IN 2014, THE BUILDING SAT EMPTY FOR FOUR YEARS UNTIL ITS 2018 REOPENING AS LIBERAL ARTS ROXBURY.
